The Best Time for Safari
Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa and has one of the most diverse landscapes in the region. Landscapes range from low coastline areas to high hills in the countryside, and mountainous regions such as Kilimanjaro. Tanzania has snow, stunning beaches, sprawling savannahs and the vast lake districts of Victoria and Tanganyika.
Animal migration patterns are determined by the change of season, most notably the annual migration (called the Great Migration) of the wildebeest from Kenya to Northern Tanzania. The best months for watching the Great Migration across the plains of the Serengeti are from May to July when the plains are fresh and green, and from November to March when the animals return to mate.
We can advise you on choosing the best time of year for your journey.
We do not recommend beach packages between April – June because at this time of year in Northern Tanzania safaris are excellent value for money.
The southern parks are fantastic all year round. However, the best times to visit them is from July to October during the dry season. The climate is hot and dry with very low humidity.
Mahale, Katavi and the other Western parks are also at their peak from August to the end of October, when game viewing is at its best.
Tanzania also has a light (short) rainy season from December – March. This period is known as the ‘short rains,’ and is often little more than a fresh downpour for a short period each day, usually followed by clear sunshine.
The focus of safaris in Northern Tanzania during this season should be on the short-grass plains of the Serengeti/Ngorongoro eco-system. The annual wildebeest & zebra migration arrives on the plains from December onwards and it is here where they mate and then give birth to thousands of calves in February and March. These rich mineral plains are where the great herds will stay for as long as feeding permits. It is thought that the iron and zinc found in the fodder of these plains are what attracts the wildebeest.
From December through to March the Ndutu area is a prime location for viewing the herds.
Other parks:
Located between the shores of Lake Manyara and the Western Escarpment of the Rift Valley, Lake Manyara National Park is worth a visit at any time of year. Its secluded location and plentiful resources provide a rich habitat for animals and make it ideal for game viewing during all seasons.
Similarly, nearby Ngorongoro Crater provides an abundance of wildlife throughout the year. Although a tourist hotspot during the dry seasons (December – January and July – August), Ngorongoro’s close wildlife encounters are difficult to surpass.
Tarangire National Park surrounds a long river valley, which is best known for its massive elephant population and ancient baobab trees. The Tarangire River is the only source of water in the area from July until mid-November, making it a haven for massive herds of thirsty animals.
TIP FOR SAFARI GUIDE
We recommend a minimum tip of US$50 per vehicle per day

FAQ
What sort of clothing should I wear?
The weather in Tanzania is unpredictable, so bring clothes that will prepare you for all possibilities. Different altitudes and landscapes produce differing climates and the temperature can drop significantly, especially in the highlands. Try to keep the colour of your clothes neutral so as not to disturb animals on safari.
Will we have to share a car with other people?
If you go on a private safari with Adventure Discover, you won’t have to share the car with anyone. You and your partner / friends / family will have your own vehicle and driver guide. This allows you to explore at your own pace rather than being tied in with a group schedule.
How much does an Adventure Discover safari cost?
The cost of your safari is dependent upon the number of participants, vehicle, time of year, type of accommodation and experiences included. Our prices generally range from US$ 500 to US$1500 per person per day. As we do our best to cater to individual preferences, please contact us for a more specific price.
Why do other tour companies offer cheaper prices?
At Adventure Discover, the highest quality safaris and Kilimanjaro Climbs are our priority. All our guides are trained mountain and safari guides with extensive knowledge of the local parks and a wealth of guiding experience. We are committed to ensuring fair salaries for our guides and porters, and we also must pay high government taxes. All other expenses go towards ensuring a high standard of services including meals, comfortable accommodation, reliable transport and professional service. We are not cheap because our safari is worth the money.
Should I choose tented or lodged accommodation?
We carefully select the lodges and camps for our safaris according to the highest standards, and you can mix and match as you like, guided by our recommendations.
Basic camps are very comfortable, but things like electricity or flush toilets may not be available everywhere. Luxury camps, on the other hand, can include complete accommodation with features such as ensuites.
A lodge is like a small, boutique hotel, designed to give you a taste of Tanzania. Staying in lodges ensures an intimate experience. We try to avoid the mainstream lodges to make your experience as unique as possible.
How can I create my own experience with Adventure Discover?
We take time to learn about your personal interests and design your tour accordingly. All you need to do is give us a rough outline of your intended itinerary and budget, and we will handle the rest! We are available to answer any queries you may have at any time, so all you need to worry about is having a good time.
What else can we do with Adventure Discover?
We can arrange a multitude of activities, such as: hiking, cycling, canoeing, cultural exchanges, volunteering and soaking up the sun in Zanzibar. Just browse through our other itineraries and find whatever suits you. We want to make your trip as memorable as possible.
How much cash should I take with me on Kilimanjaro/Safari?
As ATM’s are difficult to find while on safari, it is advisable to bring enough cash to tip your cook and guide, and to pay for minor expenses, such as snacks and drinks. It is possible to access ATM’s in the towns and cities between national parks, and in Stone Town in Zanzibar, but there are no ATM’s in the parks themselves
Can my children take part in activities? What age is suitable?
As a general rule, we do not recommend our activities for children under six years of age, however, you know your child best. We recommend that you plan your itinerary to suit your child’s needs and abilities. For any further queries feel free to contact us at any time
How much should I tip on Kilimanjaro/Safari?
First of all, tipping is done completely at your own discretion. If the service is not good, you do not need to tip.
Some camps or lodges have a staff tip box, however, at others it may be more appropriate to tip the headwaiter or the manager. Generally speaking, you can tip both the staff and the guide individually. It all depends on your itinerary. When you book your Kilimanjaro climb or Safari, you will receive a comprehensive information package, including guidelines on tipping. We recommend a minimum tip of US$50 per vehicle per day and US$100 per crew per day on the mountain
